"Healthy ageing is a challenge. If we can identify the factors that influence ageing, we can begin to change them. We can start to identify those at risk of poor health, and design interventions to help them, boosting our chances of longer, healthier lives.
It's happening already. Life course studies, where groups of people are studied across their lives, are offering us valuable information about the way we age, and in the process, are redefining the way we think about ageing: The way we age is not set in stone. We're not all destined to frailty and ill health. Some of the factors that influence the way we age are things that we can control ourselves, such as diet and exercise. By changing our lifestyle, we can positively influence the way that we age.
Life course studies also show us that ageing is not something that happens when we hit retirement. It happens through life, from our very first moment in our mother's womb, to our very last breath. Many of the factors that influence it act across life. Some, like what you eat as a child, can influence your health many decades later. So whatever your age, it's never too late to do something to promote good health in later life."
